چکیده

Particle algorithms are becoming a standard tool for the dynamical simulation of granular flows. An overview of the standard techniques is given along with a discussion of their suitability for multi-processor machines of the vector or scaler type. In particular, the issues surrounding efficiency and load-balancing are discussed. Furthermore, two examples illustrating the potential uses of such simulations for industrial applications are discussed: 1) simulation of granular flows through a hopper and 2) determination of diffusion constants in rotating drums.

Numerical Simulation of Granular Column Collapses with Pressure-Dependent Viscoplastic Model using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamic Method

This paper presents a numerical analysis of granular column collapse phenomenon using a two-dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamics model and a local constitutive law proposed by Jop et al. This constitutive law, which is based on the viscoplastic behaviour of dense granular material flows, is characterized by an apparent viscosity depending both on the local strain rate and the local press...

Momentum transport in granular flows

We investigate the error induced by considering only binary collisions in the momentum transport of hard-sphere granular materials, as is done in kinetic theories. In this process, we first present a general microscopic derivation of the momentum transport equation and compare it to the kinetic theory derivation, which relies on the binary collision assumption. These two derivations yield diffe...

Stress and large-scale spatial structures in dense, driven granular flows.

We study the appearance of large-scale dynamical heterogeneities in a simplified model of a driven, dissipative granular system. Simulations of steady-state gravity-driven flows of inelastically colliding hard disks show the formation of large-scale linear structures of particles with a high collision frequency. These chains can be shown to carry much of the collisional stress in the system due...

Neural Simulations on Multi-Core Architectures

Neuroscience is witnessing increasing knowledge about the anatomy and electrophysiological properties of neurons and their connectivity, leading to an ever increasing computational complexity of neural simulations. At the same time, a rather radical change in personal computer technology emerges with the establishment of multi-cores: high-density, explicitly parallel processor architectures for...

2D dry granular free-surface flow over complex topography with obstacles. Part I: experimental study using a consumer-grade RGB-D sensor

Avalanches, debris flows and other types of gravity-driven granular flows are a common hazard in mountainous regions. These regions often have human settlements in the lower parts of valleys, with human structures dangerously exposed to the destructive effects of these geophysical flows. Therefore a scientific effort has been made to understand, model and simulate geophysical granular flows. In...
